Chronology of cameras Gilles et fils

The Chambre Coffret is present on the catalogue of E. Gilles from around 1900. This specimen is signed however by Gilles & Fils Succ., which makes it somewhat older. It is a good quality camera that possesses a typical geared front focusing mechanism, and closed allows to enclose completely the lens and front shutter unit. This specimen is however different, and instead of a front shutter has an integrated focal plane shutter. The shutter is an Anschütz model 1 with 2-slits and to be set internally on the curtain. The speeds vary between 1/10 and 1/1000 plus P in a combination of slit width and variable helical tension. The shutter is made by Goerz as it can be seen the typical Anschütz markings on the curtain – if the camera was assembled in Germany or France it is not clear.

This specimen is for 9 x 12 plate format, and, according to the catalogue, the body is covered in seal leather. The back has a door that closes completely the double plate holders, and for their operation has a cross window that allows to operate the chassis curtain. The ground glass is blue for better perception of black & white. As it closes completely front and back, the casing is said to ‘dissimulate completely the photographic camera’.

The camera could also be made for formats 11 x 15, 9 x 18 (stereoscopic) and 13 x 18, and could be fitted with extension for longer focal lengths as well as allowing the use of wide angle lenses without obstruction by the base. In this case the camera is fitted with a René Koch Paris Ser. B/9x12 lens, with focal length of 136 mm and maximum aperture of 8.
